Leipzig Succession, 1722

On 5 June 1722, Johann Kuhnau, the Kantor of the Thomasschule--
the most important musical post in Leipzig and one of the most
important in all of Germany--died. Six candidates were considered for
the position: Telemann, Kauffmann, Schott, Rolle, Graupner
and Bach. The town council first offered the position to Telemann,
who was not released from his current post in Hamburg. Of the remaining
five, two withdrew their applications as they could not teach Latin. The
position was then offered to Graupner, who declined, having been offered
a higher salary in Darmstadt. Finally the town council reluctantly offered
the post to Bach, their third choice. This is your opportunity to second
guess the Leipzig town council. The candidates are to be judged by the
quality of their cantatas, though, the ability to teach Latin is as
important as the quality of the music.
